Production Constraints and Improvement Strategies of Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) Genotypes for Drought Tolerance

نویسندگان

چکیده

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp. L) is an important leguminous crop largely grown by smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa for food security and animal feed. The objective of this study was to review the production constraints improvement strategies cowpea genotypes drought tolerance. Data were analysed through use literature from various sources. In Africa, cowpeas are produced mainly West which accounts 60% worldwide production. A lot pests diseases affect cowpeas, often results total loss. Through continuous improvement, many new cultivars continually being identified genetically characterised, it thus necessary evaluate these lines under different environments. There a need multidisciplinary collaborations among breeders other relevant stakeholders such as farmer extension workers because improved must be according preferred traits. Due declining rainfall pattern there urgent requirement breeding programmes that focus on developing varieties with short maturity, drought, pest, disease present discusses

Combined Effects of Ozone and Drought on the Physiology and Membrane Lipids of Two Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) Cultivars

The interactive effects of drought and ozone on the physiology and leaf membrane lipid content, composition and metabolism of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) were investigated in two cultivars (EPACE-1 and IT83-D) grown under controlled conditions. The drought treatment (three-week water deprivation) did not cause leaf injury but restricted growth through stomatal closure. In contrast, th...

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) Metabolomics: Osmoprotection as a Physiological Strategy for Drought Stress Resistance and Improved Yield

Plants usually tolerate drought by producing organic solutes, which can either act as compatible osmolytes for maintaining turgor, or radical scavengers for protecting cellular functions. However, these two properties of organic solutes are often indistinguishable during stress progression. This study looked at individualizing properties of osmotic adjustment vs. osmoprotection in plants, using...

Effect of pO(2) on Growth and Nodule Functioning of Symbiotic Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.).

Nodulated cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp. cv Vita 3:Bradyrhizobium CB 756) plants were cultured with their whole root system or crown root nodulation zone maintained for periods from 5 to 69 days after planting in atmospheres containing a range of pO(2) (1-80%, v/v) while the rest of the plant grew in normal air. Growth (dry matter yield) and N(2) fixation were largely unaffected by pO(2) fr...
